Nissan is an automobile company headquartered in Yokohama, Japan. The company was founded in 1934, by Yoshisuke Aikawa, William Gorham and Den Kenjiro. The company was originally founded and known as Datsun.

Nissan's founder, Yoshisuke Aikawa graduated from Tokyo Imperial University and moved to the United States where he worked in a factory in order to develop casting skills which he used to establish Tobata Casting Co., Ltd., after he returned to Japan in 1910. Meanwhile in 1911, Masujiro Hashimoto established The Kwaishinsha Motor Car Works which turned out to be the leader in the domestic automobile industry in Japan. In 1914, Kwaishinsha manufactured the DAT car which was named after three men who invested in the company Kenjiro Den, Rokuro Aoyama, and Aketaro Takeuchi.

In 1931, DAT Jidosha Seizo Co., Ltd. became affiliated with Tobata Casting Co., Ltd. by becoming a subsidiary of Tobata. In 1932, the company changed its name to Datsun. By 1934 the corporate name had officially changed to Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. when Nihon Sangyo Co., Ltd. became the only investor at a stockholders meeting.

From 1938 and through 1945, Nissan switched from producing smaller vehicles such as cars to producing trucks and military vehicles. The Allied forces took control over Nissan's productions in 1945 and didn't release full control until 1955. The 60's and 70's were times of growth and expansion for Nissan due to the release of economical and affordable cars. With success in the United States in the 70's, Nissan was able to expand to seventeen countries with manufacturing plants.

In the late 90's, Nissan made an alliance with Renault and took over Renaults luxury car line known as Infiniti. Today Nissan is one of the largest car manufacturers in Japan, and the world with models such as the Titan pickup truck, their Z-series of sports cars, and their Altima and Maxima sedans.
