Motif Foodworks, formerly known as Motif, is a food ingredients company that uses biotechnology to brew proteins and nutrients, for more delicious and sustainable foods that is headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts and was founded in 2019 as a subsidiary of Ginkgo Bioworks. Motif Foodworks uses fermentation to brew proteins and nutrients.
February 26, 2019 Motif Foodworks completed their series A funding round with $90 million in funding from Fonterra, Louis Dreyfus Company, and Viking Global Investors. Ginkgo Bioworks launch Motif Foodworks after completing raising their series A funding round to begin developing alternative proteins and other ingredients for global food companies using biotechnology and fermentation.
On August 19, 2019 Motif Foodworks completed a growth equity funding round where the company received $27.5 million in funding from General Atlantic (lead investor) and CPT Capital. After receiving this round of growth equity the company rebranded from Motif to Motif Foodworks to better reflect the companies technological partnership with Ginkgo Bioworks. The company will be using their growth equity funding to accelerate their research and development, expand academic collaborations, hire more science and regulatory staff, and speed up the product pipeline for the alternative protein products.
