Article

The Moscow Art Theater is a drama theater founded in 1898 by Konstantin Sergeevich Stanislavsky and Vladimir Ivanovich Nemirovich-Danchenko.

It was originally called the Artistic Public Theatre. Since 1901 - the Moscow Art Theater (MKhT), since 1919 - the Moscow Art Academic Theater (MKhAT), since 1932 - the Moscow Art Academic Theater of the USSR named after M. Gorky.

In 1987, it was divided into 2 theaters that adopted official names: the Moscow Art Academic Theater named after M. Gorky (abbreviated as the Moscow Art Theater named after M. Gorky), which is the successor of the Moscow Art Theater of the USSR named after M. Gorky, and the new theater - the Moscow Art Academic Theater named after A.P. Chekhov (Moscow Art Theater named after A.P. Chekhov, later the Moscow Art Theater named after A.P. Chekhov).
