Metaboards

Metaboards uses metamaterials to embed wireless charging into surfaces so multiple items can be charged simultaneously.

Metaboards is developing wireless energy transfer technology using metamaterials with a focus on wireless power and data with different surfaces being used as a conduit. Metamaterial is an artificial composite that has electrical properties due to its structure rather than directly for the materials it is composed of. Metamaterials can be made of materials such as plastics or metals which are arranged in geometric structures that have properties not found in nature.

Metaboard's technology allows many electronic devices to be powered across large surfaces without the need for alignment and with focussed power. Metamaterials transmit and control magneto inductive waves (MIW) across surfaces. Metaboards is working on ways to embed wireless charging into surfaces so multiple items can be charged simultaneously.

Metaboard’s technology has been demonstrated to charge devices places casually on a non-metal surface such as a table. The charging boards can be fitting underneath worktops, tables and desks and in the future could possibly be incorporated into furniture.

Metaboards formed for the purpose of commercialising IP from research conducted at the University of Oxford. The company has received seed funding from Oxford University Innovation (OUI).
