Maple Leaf Foods is a Canadian meat packaging company selling products in 20 global markets, and employing over 11,000 people. The company is headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, and formed after the merger of Canada Packers and Maple Leaf Mills in 1991. In 1995, McCain Capital and the Teachers' Pension Plan Board became the two biggest shareholders in the company and gained controlling interest. Brands owned by Maple Leaf Foods are Maple Leaf, Maple Leaf Prime, Maple Leaf Natural Selections, Scheiders, Schneiders Country Naturals, and Mina.
In 1991 Maple Leaf Mills Limited merged with Canada Packers Ltd to create Maple Leaf Foods. One year after the companies formation in 1992, Maple Leaf Foods purchased Vancouver Fancy Meats and a prepared meat plant in Ontario owned by Shopsy. In 1996 the McCain Capital Corporation and the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan Board acquired a controlling interest in Maple Leaf Foods, and Maple Leaf Foods began selling poultry products commercially for the first time.
