Karana is a plant-based food company founded in Singapore in 2018 by Dan Riegler that optimizes natural SE Asian ingredients like jackfruit and banana blossoms for use in food service and other applications. The company's flagship product is young jackfruit, which has a naturally meat-like texture that can be prepared as a plant-based alternative to poultry, pork, and seafood. Karana is focused on jackfruit due to the crop's net improvement over meat across environmental impact, nutrition, and smallholder farmer income. Jackfruit can be cultivated as an organic polyculture crop that requires little water and land, and is resistant to drought and pests. As a natural whole plant ingredient, jackfruit has a low Glycemic Index and contains a number of healthy nutrients including fiber, magnesium, potassium, vitamins and carbohdyrates . Jackfruit is the largest tree-borne fruit in the world with an annual yield of 40-50 tons per hectare, and has been identified as a crop with potential to help address food security issues and improve farmer incomes .
With demand for meat in Asia projected to grow 78% by 2050, there is a need for healthy and sustainable food products that are targeted to Asian markets. Karana aims to help meet this demand by drawing on chef partnerships in Singapore and regionally sourced plant ingredients so the food service sector can expand healthier and sustainable food choices.
Alongside its focus on plant-based meat, Karana is pursuing research using plant ingredients as scaffolding materials to support the development and commercialization of clean meat.
