Johns Hopkins Center for Health and Security was founded in 1998 by Dean Emeritus D.A. Henderson, at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health who led the successful global eradication effort against smallpox . From 2003 it was affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and as of 2017 returned to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.



The Center for Health Security aims to make progress in helping communities deal with Zika, Ebola, refugee health and antibiotic resistance. The group brings together policies, organizations, systems and tools to prevent and respond to outbreaks and public health crises . The Center receives support from government and foundations to conduct independent research and analysis with the help of scholars in science, medicine, public health, law, social sciences, economics and national security. Mission areas include global health security, infectious disease, disaster preparedness, bio/chemical/nuclear threats and science and policy .
