James M. Buchanan

James M. Buchanan, also known as James McGill Buchanan Jr., was an economist born on October 3, 1919, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He studied at the University of Chicago, Middle Tennessee State University, and the University of Tennessee. Buchanan was a citizen of the United States and passed away on January 9, 2013, in Blacksburg, Virginia.

During his academic career, Buchanan had Frank Knight as his doctoral advisor and advised doctoral students Charles Plott, Randall G. Holcombe, and Mark V. Pauly. He was awarded the 1986 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his contributions to the field. As an economist, Buchanan primarily worked and resided in the United States.
