Interpersonal Neurobiology

An interdisciplinary field exploring the human experience.

Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB) is an interdisciplinary field founded by Dan Siegel and Allan Schore. IPNB invites all fields of science to contribute to and find consilience amongst their different areas of study, for the purpose of understanding the human experience. Fields include Anthropology, Biology (developmental, evolution, genetics, zoology), Cognitive Science, Computer Science, Developmental Psychopathology, Linguistics, Neuroscience (affective, cognitive, developmental, social), Mathematics, Mental Health, Physics, Psychiatry, Psychology (cognitive, developmental, evolutionary, experimental, of religion, social, attachment theory, memory), Sociology, and Systems Theory (chaos and complexity theory). These areas of study are brought together into a consilient framework that is used to define the mind and how it might best be cared for.

Integration

The concept of "integration" is central to IPNB. Integration in this context is defined as the linkage of differentiated aspects of a system, whether they exist in a single person or in a group of people. Integration is an on-going process that has qualities of flexibility and adaptability. Integration is measured in terms of "harmony". The opposite of integration is chaos and rigidity, which are both present in varying degrees in what are commonly referred to as "mental disorders" in the American Psychiatric Association's DSM-5. IPNB's definition of integration, and the lack thereof, provides a new working context to re-define our understanding of mental disorders and how people relate in fields like mental health, education, technology, and other disciplines, to create a healthier and more integrated world.

Integration is the linkage of differentiated parts of mental processes, such as thought with feeling, or bodily sensation with logic. Interpersonally, integration includes respect for each person's uniquely different human expression, while simultaneously acknowledging and linking to others via empathy and compassion.
