Born in London in 1902 Herbert R Stewart moved to the United States at an early age attending schools in Addison and Woodland, Maine. He graduated from MIT with a BS degree in 1924 and an MS degree in 1925 both in Electrical Engineering. A graduate student of Vannevar Bush, Stewart's thesis was based on the product integraph. About the invention Stewart stated:

It was Dr. Bush's suggestion early in 1925 that a mechanical device should be developed to perform the continuous integration, which was the beginning of a continually expanding program of general solution of transients in networks by electromechanical means.
