Grammarly is a web application for checking spelling, grammar, and plagiarism that is headquartered in San Francisco, California and was founded in 2009 by Alex Shevchenko, Dmytro Lider, and Max Lytvyn. The company uses artificial intelligence to power their writing assistance software that integrates with emails and messages (Gmail, Outlook, Messenger, and Yahoo), documents and projects (Slack, Google Docs, Jira, and SalesForce), and social media (Medium, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn).



The free version of Grammarly offering grammar, spelling, and conciseness checking. The premium version of Grammarly offers users the features of the free version plus the following features: readability, vocabulary enhancement, genre-specific writing style checks, and plagiarism detection.

On May 8, 2017 Grammarly completed a venture capital found with $110 million in funding from General Catalyst (lead investor), Spark Capital, Institutional Venture Partners (IVP), and Breyer Capital.
