Golden is based in SoMA, San Francisco, USA, and was started in 2017 by Jude Gomila. The company's full legal name is Golden Recursion Inc. Golden raised a seed round in 2017 (announced in 2019) of $5m from a16z, Founders Fund, Giga Fund, SV Angel, Aston Motes (1st employee of Dropbox), Christina Brodbeck, Joe Montana of Liquid 2 Ventures, Josh Buckley, Howie Liu (CEO of Airtable), Jack Smith (Founder of Vungle), Trip Adler (Founder of Scribd), James Tamplin (Founder of Firebase), Charlie Delingpole, Paul McKellar (Co Founder of Square), Sumon Sadhu, Wei Guo, Ryan Pawell, Balaji Srinivasan (Founder of Earn.com), Mike Einziger (Incubus) and others.
Golden uses machine intelligence to build a self-constructing knowledge base. Golden contains canonical information describing entities (sometimes referred to as topic pages) and allows users to create, contribute and compare knowledge with a set of AI-based tools. AI-assisted editing allows users to automatically extract summaries and infobox data from external web-based sources and AI-based suggestions enable users to make quick, modular updates to topics.
Golden uses clusters to group related topics. Clusters include Blockchain & cryptocurrency, Cell-based and plant-based meat, Synthetic biology, and others. Each cluster contains links to hundreds of topic pages.

Activity feed
The activity feed on Golden shows users the most recent updates to the cite. Users can filter what updates they view using the gear icon.
Watched topics
Users can select watch topic pages and clusters pages. Watched pages are private and will populate a users activity feed.
Issues
Users can see all open issues and can select the type of issue they want to see.
AI suggestions
Users can contribute to Golden by accepting or rejecting Golden AI's suggestions to the knowledge base.
Golden for Teams
Golden also offers Golden for Teams for groups who want to internally track knowledge. Members of teams can use the Golden Query Tool to search across Golden’s knowledge base to find specific information in more corporate focused queries. Teams can also fork public pages, make private edits, and watch interesting topics privately.
Query tool
The Golden query tool allows members to make more detailed searches in Golden's knowledge base. Members can opt to receive email alerts of new results in saved queries.

The Golden features page displays what features and tools are available to contributors, readers, and organizations.
Embedded tables on entity pages
Embedded tables for venture capital funds, funded companies, investments, etc are added to topic pages to make it easier to store and explore data.
Lists for Team plan members
Team plan members can select topics from query results and add them to saved lists in order to track interesting topics and ideas.
Tweet quotes from Golden
When a section of prose is highlighted on a Golden topic page, users see the option to create an issue, or share the section via social media.
Timeline suggestions
Topic pages have AI suggestions for timeline entries. Users can accept, reject, or accept and edit the timeline entry in the editor.
Blockquote feature
Quotes are supported in the body of the article. The blockquote button is found in the editor bar. Either highlight text to add to the quote, or add text after.
Citation resize
Users can adjust the text covered by a citation by dragging the brackets at the edge of the citation.
Golden officially launches
Code block in editor
Code is supported in the body of topics. Navigate to the edit bar and click Code Block button.
Math equations added to editor bar
Math equations can now be added to pages using the tool in the editor bar. Look for the function button.
Superscript and subscript added to Golden editor bar
Users can use superscript and subscript to add more detailed knowledge to math and science topics.
Fuzzy dates for infobox and timeline entries
When adding a date to an infobox or timeline entry, users no longer need the full date, if its unavailable.
New suggestion type - disambiguate topic
Users can select which topic to assign a block or group of data. If the topic doesn't exist, the user has the option to create a new topic.
Multiple cell pasting into tables
Users can paste multiple cells into tables making it easier to get data in faster.
Expandable tables
Content is easier to read in custom and native tables. Users can select the 'expand' icon in the top right corner of the table to expand the table to the width of their browser.
News tab displays news articles related to topics a user watches
News stories related to topics a user watches are shown in the main news tab. News stories are also shown in news tab of a topic page.
Issues tab
Users can see all open, site content issues and can select the type of issue they want to see.
Users can drag and drop images
Users can drag an image from their desktop and drop the image into a topic page.
Full text search
Users are shown search results for topic titles and now also content on topic pages.
Users can create a private organization
Users can now create a private organization by selecting 'Create organization' from the top left dropdown menu.
Tooltips in the editor bar
Hovering over an icon in editor bar will bring up a hovercard with information about the tool.
Watched pages
Users can select watch topic pages and clusters pages. Watched pages are private and will populate a users activity feed.
Fork public pages for private knowledge tracking
Members of private organizations can fork public topic pages and create a private copy for their own research or notes.
AI-assisted editor
Users can use the machine-assisted edit mode that automatically extracts summaries and infobox data from external links.
Templates for infoboxes
Users can use templates to add a collection of several fields at once when editing infoboxes.
Auto selection of publish type (major or minor)
We auto calculate what size the publish is and this saves a little time.
Discard draft preview
Users can see what content will be lost when a draft is discarded.
Infoboxes for topic pages in edit mode
Infoboxes containing additional structured information (e.g. URL) about a topic are launched in edit mode.
User profile search
Users can search for user profile in the main search bar.
Ability to log issues surrounding a topic
Users can log specific issues with an issue tracking CRM on the issues tab on the topic page. For example 'citation needed' or 'spelling error'.
Infoboxes for topic pages in read mode
Infoboxes containing additional structured information (e.g. URL) about a topic are launched.
Facebook and Google authorization
Users can sign up and login with existing accounts.
Social sharing button
Share button is added to topic pages and lets users share Golden pages on social media.
Video unfurling
Pasting a video link anywhere in the body of a topic page or in a timeline event unfurls the link to a video element.
Social invite button
Users can invite someone knowledgable about a topic to contribute to a specific page using the 'Invite a Contributor' button.
Magic cells for tables
When a link to an article is pasted into a table on a topic page, the title, and author, if applicable, auto-populates.

Cmd(meta)+shift+8 activates bullet points.
Upgrades tab added to topic pages
Upgrades are machine suggested knowledge contributions to Golden topic pages. Users decide whether or not the proposed suggestions are accurate and relevant.
Customizable feed
The content for the knowledge feed is made customizable. Content for the feed is aggregated from activity on favorited clusters, topics, and followed people.
Restore to a previous version
Contributors can revert to a previous version of a topic by using a menu in the topic's activity tab.

Users can see how many people have favorited a page.
