In 1889 he returned to England, where two more of his novels were published.

During this period, Francis Adams' health deteriorates significantly, he suffers from an incurable lung disease. From December 1892 to February 1893, Adams spent in Alexandria, where he was trying to finish a book about the British occupation of Egypt. He suffered from depression caused by the hopelessness of his illness.
