Dead zone (ecology)

Dead zones are areas within the worlds oceans that are characterized by low oxygen, high phosphorous, and high nitrogen — typically coming from agricultural run off. These conditions create algae booms that eventually die off and rid the effected area of oxygen resulting in mass die offs of fish and other aquatic life; creating oceanic desserts essentially void of life.
