CRU was incorporated by brothers Jim and Jack Harvey in Milpitas, California on July 2, 1986 as Connector Resources Unlimited, Inc. Selling removable drives, the business grew until it was acquired by Labtec in 1997, which in-turn was sold to Logitec in 2001. The company was spun-out in 2002. Since then, CRU has acquired StorCase (2006), a competitor in removable drives, WiebeTech (2008), a digital forensics and storage equipment provider, and ioSafe (2018), a manufacturer of disaster protected hard drives and network attached storage (NAS) appliances. CRU is one of the largest manufacturers of digital cinema distribution equipment.
