Grants are issued on a rolling basis to to Delaware C corps by Breakout Labs to selected companies after they complete an application their application process. Grants are philanthropic in nature, and are typically given to companies that would normally not have funding opportunities through the private sector because their scientific products and services are too speculative. Companies receiving grants from Breakout Labs are to issue Breakout Labs equity securities at a 20% discounted rate worth the value of the grant if a later funding round is complete. Every company with a Breakout Labs grant must report quarterly to Breakout Labs with details on how they are using grant money for their scientific and business progress.

Breakout Labs is part of the Thiel Foundation and was founded by Peter Thiel and Lindy Morris Fishburne in 2011. Breakout Labs issues grants, mostly between $250,000 to $500,000, to American or Canadian scientist entrepreneurs working on the development and commercialization of scientific discoveries in technology, biology, materials, and energy.
