Blokhuysen's performance at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi
At the Vancouver Olympics, he took 9th place in the 5000 m and became the bronze medalist in the team race together with Sven Kramer, Mark Teitert and Simon Kuipers. In the race for 3rd place, the Dutch team set an Olympic record.
A year later, in 2011, he became the silver medalist of the European Championship (lost to Ivan Skobrev) and the bronze medalist of the World Championship in the classic all-around. At the World Championships in individual distances in Incell, he took third place in the team race.
In 2012, he again became the silver medalist of the European Championship (lost to Sven Kramer), became the second at the World Championships in the classic all-around and the world champion in the team race, together with Kuhn Verwey and Sven Kramer.
In 2013, he took silver at the European Championship for the third time in a row. He performed less well at the World Championships (11th place), as it turned out later, the decline was due to intestinal infection (infectious mononucleosis)[1]. In March 2013, after a conflict with coach Gerard Kemkers, he announced his retirement from the TVM team, in which he had been training with Sven Kramer for several years, at the end of the season.
He became the silver medalist of the 2014 World Championship in the all-around.
