The technology department in focused on developing technology for fields of study such as human disease and genomics. It also has a diagnostics department includes clinical testing and in vitro diagnostics.

COVID-19

In 2020, the company utilized its real-time fluorescent RT-PCR kits to test residents in China for COVID-19. The test can deliver results within hours, thus isolating patients with the virus sooner. BGI also developed technology to monitor mutations of the virus using a metagenomic sequencing kit.
