Beckman was educated at several institutions, including the California Institute of Technology , the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign , and University High School in Normal, Illinois . Roscoe G. Dickinson served as Beckman's doctoral advisor .
Beckman founded the company Beckman Coulter . He died on May 18, 2004, in La Jolla . Beckman received several awards during his lifetime, including being inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1987 .
