Akasha stands for 'Advanced Knowledge Architecture for Social Human Advocacy' and is a blockchain-based decentralized social media platform that was founded by Mihai Alisie in 2015. Akasha is built using the Ethereum blockchain and is embedded into the Inter-Planetary File System (IPFS). The Akasha decentralized social media platform is built to ensure the platform is resistant against censorship and be unable to be taken offline because it does not have any one central point of failure or lack of bandwidth issues.
On May 3, 2016 Akasha began allowing people to sign up for their alpha version of their social media platform in celebration of World Press Freedom Day. Their alpha application had approximately 10,000 unique identities sign up.
On November 4, 2017 Akasha launched their Beta application at the Ethereum DEVCON 3 conference and officially launched the beta application in February 2018 which had approximately 40,000 unique identities. On April 18, 2018 Akasha launched the beta version of their web application running the Metamask and IPFS bot extensions.
