Spearhead backs tech founders with a $200K fund and 15% carry so they can start angel investing and was launched in 2018 by AngelList. Founders also receive mentorship, including monthly masterclasses from top angel investors and VCs. Founders can receive up to $1M to invest over 2 years.

Spearhead backs founders with a $200K fund to start angel investing. Founders also receive mentorship, including monthly masterclasses from top investors. As they progress, founders receive up to $1M to invest.

Spearhead is not a scout program; it is focused on discovering and mentoring great angel investors. Scout programs, in contrast, are focused on generating downstream dealflow for venture firms.

Spearhead is not proprietary to a single venture firm. When founders join Spearhead they get a fund that they control. They are also able to invite other investors (including other firms) to invest in their fund.

Founders have full control over the fund and authority over investments. They earn 15% carried interest on the fund, which means they get to keep 15% of the fund’s profit. For example, if a founder turns $200K into $2.5M, they earn $345K.

The startup ecosystem consists of the individuals (entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, Angel investors, mentors); institutions and organizations (top research universities and institutes, business schools and entrepreneurship programs operated by universities and colleges, non-profit entrepreneurship support organizations, government entrepreneurship programs and services, chamber of commerce) business incubators and business accelerators and top-performing entrepreneurial firms and startups. A region with all of these elements is considered to be a "strong" entrepreneurship ecosystem. Some of the most famous entrepreneurial ecosystems are Silicon Valley in California, where major computer, Internet firms and top universities such as Stanford University create a successful startup environment, Boston (where Massachusetts Institute of Technology is located) and Berlin, home of WISTAWISTA (a top research area), numerous creative industries, leading entrepreneurs and startup firms.
