Samuel Morse , born on April 27, 1791, in Charlestown, Boston , was an American inventor, painter, and writer . He is best known for his invention of the Morse code , a system of representing letters and numbers as a series of dots and dashes. Samuel Morse was the child of Jedidiah Morse .
Morse was educated at Yale University, Yale College, and Phillips Academy and held multiple occupations throughout his lifetime, including physicist, photographer, painter, and writer . In addition to his work in his various fields, he is known for some pseudonyms he used throughout his career: American and Brutus .
He worked in various genres of painting, such as history painting, landscape painting, and portrait painting . Samuel Morse was awarded the 1975 National Inventors Hall of Fame Inductee .
Morse passed away on April 2, 1872, in New York City with American citizenship .
