The Finnish company Nokia began its activity with the manufacture of paper but has gained worldwide fame as the producer of mobile phones and supplied equipment.

First steps

The new digital technologies attracted the attention of the company. Back in the 1980s when analog technology ruled the planet, the company initially engaged in the development of digital switches, but soon Nokia switched to making their own phones, the first of which weighed 10 kg.

Further, the devices were improved over several years, made lighter and more mobile. Thanks to the diligence of engineers the Nokia Cityman came into being, this device already could be held with only one hand.

Triumph

The ascent to the top of the business began in 1992 with the release of the first Nokia GSM phone, which provided the company with world fame. The next major success came in 1990 with the Nokia 9000 Communicator, which was equipped with a database, Internet connection, e-mail, and fax, and the phone Nokia 8110 even shown in the hit movie The Matrix.

However, Nokia 1100 was recognized as the best-selling model: since 2003, this model has been sold in the amount of 200 million units.

Fall from Olympus

Unfortunately, in the early 2000s, the company's management took a number of erroneous steps, due to in 2007 Nokia's position was greatly shaken. In 2012 the company was forced to give way to the new leader in the mobile phone market — Samsung.

Today, the backbone of Nokia's oldest employees is working at HMD Global Oy.
