Overview

Mayo Clinic is a nonprofit organization that has a stated mission to be committed to clinical practice, education, research, and providing expert care. It was established in the late 1800s in Minnesota with an initial partnership between several doctors in the Mayo family and the Sisters of Saint Francis.

Doctors from a variety of medical specialties work together to care for patients, and the doctor network includes more than 3,800 physicians and scientists and more than 60,000 allied health staff. Mayo Clinic has sites in Minnesota, Florida, Arizona, and London, England. Mayo Clinic also serves over seventy communities through Mayo Clinic Health System. Collectively, these locations care for more than 1.3 million people each year.

History

Mayo Clinic originated in Minnesota after a tornado ripped through the area where the founders—doctors from the Mayo family and the Sisters of St. Francis—were located. The closest hospital was almost 80 miles away, so there was no place to treat those who were injured in the tornado. Mother Alfred, the leader of the Sisters of St. Francis, collaborated with the Mayo doctors and provided rooms at the Sisters' convent where the doctors could help people with injuries from the tornado.

The Mayo Doctors and the Sisters of St. Francis continued working together to open a hospital several years later called St. Mary's Hospital. The organization would grow throughout the decades to include a clinic and medical education center. In 1986, the clinic and education center merged with Rochester Methodist Hospital, an affiliated hospital, to create the organization that is known

as Mayo Clinic today.

Services

Mayo Clinic has a variety of services, solutions, and offerings for patients, doctors, and researchers.

Medical care

Patients can seek medical care from doctors and specialists at one of Mayo Clinic's facilities. The organization states it develops a customized treatment plan for each of its patients. Mayo Clinic has been ranked as the best hospital in the United States for several years by U.S. News & World Report. It has been rated as the best medical care facility for specialty care for areas such as diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology (GI) and GI surgery, and pulmonology and lung surgery.

Medical research

Mayo Clinic conducts medical research through studies and trials. According to its website, there are more than 12,000 clinical trials being conducted as of 2023. These trials are designed to research novel therapies and treatments for medical issues such as cancer. Mayo Clinic developed a research task force when the COVID-19 pandemic began and continues to conduct clinical trials to better understand how to treat the disease.

Laboratories

Mayo Clinic has both reference and diagnostic labs for hospitals. The labs have workflows in place to ensure that specimens are correctly labeled and then sent to their performing labs for testing. Mayo Clinic's labs can process up to 40,000 patient specimens daily.

Technology

Mayo Clinic has developed and launched its own platform to integrate technology that improves processes in the medical industry. It has partnered with providers, pharmaceutical companies, medical device companies, health technology start-ups, patients, and payers to develop and launch its technological solutions. The platform has different features for gathering important medical data and organizing it into data sets, an artificial intelligence (AI) anti-bias check of the models, and a system to send insights to the point of care.

In 2019, Mayo Clinic partnered with Google to develop its medical technology by using its cloud computing technology. The partnership is intended to last for ten years, and in 2023, the two organizations announced they were collaborating on a technology project using generative AI that allows for medical professionals to collect, utilize, and analyze data from various sources to gain medical insights.

Partnerships

In addition to partnering with Google, Mayo Clinic has partnered with other companies for collaborations. It is developing solutions for virtual healthcare, augmented reality healthcare, and biotechnology tools, such as one for expedited blood tests.
