The future Energodar was founded on June 12, 1970, with the start of construction of the Zaporizhzhya State District Power Plant (construction was completed in 1977). On November 23, 1972, the small village was named Energodar.
During the construction of the state district power station, the village developed rapidly. In 1971, a school and a kindergarten were opened, in 1972 - a shopping center,
post office and cinema. In 1974, the construction of a hospital complex (hospital, polyclinic and hydrotherapy clinic) was completed, a city park was laid out in the forest.
Since the city was built on the sandy shore of the Kakhovka Reservoir, chernozem had to be imported for landscaping. Irrigation was carried out with river water.
In 1978, a decision was made to build the Zaporozhye NPP. On April 1, 1981, the first cubic meter of concrete was laid in the foundation of the first power unit. In the same year, enterprises began operating that ensure the construction of a nuclear power plant and a village - a plant for non-standard equipment and pipelines (NSOiT),
a plant for special building structures and a plant for large-panel housing construction. The first unit of ZNPP was launched on November 9, 1984.
With the increase in the number of jobs, the population of Energodar also grew - in 1985 it reached 50 thousand and the village received the status of a city.
Zaporozhye NPP was under construction for 8 years - in August 1989, the fifth power unit was launched.
After a long break - in 1993 - the sixth one was completed. (see Zaporozhye NPP). The power plant has become the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. Now it is the main employer in the city.
