This proposal aims to build an electrochemical device that can convert waste carbon dioxide from point sources on outposts and bases into potassium formate. The objectives for the Phase I are to 1) design and build a system that is capable of producing 5 lbs potassium formate from a CO2 stream; 2) test a system showing system efficiency >75% and projected lifetimes of >8000 hours is possible; 3) show low-cost production of formate is possible at scale. The results will be used in discussions with a commercialization partner/customer to build & test a larger system for phase II capable of producing 20 lbs of formate per day.
