Cosimo I de' Medici was born on June 12, 1519, in Florence. He was the son of Giovanni dalle Bande Nere and Maria Salviati. Cosimo I de' Medici was the second Duke of Florence from 1537 until 1569 when he became the first Grand Duke of Tuscany, a title he held until his death. He was also known as 'Bernardo Salviati' and 'Piero Strozzi' towards the end of July 1537 as he marched into Tuscany under the leadership of the exiles.

Cosimo I de' Medici was the father of multiple children, including Ferdinando I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, Francesco I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, and Maria de' Medici (1540–1557). Other children of his include Virginia, Isabella, Giovanni (cardinal), Don Giovanni, Lucrezia (Duchess of Ferrara), Antonio, Bia, Garzia, and Pietro de' Medici.

He held ownership of the Giovio Series and The Orator. Cosimo I de' Medici's occupation was noted as a king. He passed away on April 21, 1574, at Villa di Castello, and his nationality was Florentine.
