Bobruisk is a city of regional subordination in Belarus, the administrative center of the Bobruisk district of the Mogilev region. The seventh largest city in Belarus by population and area, the largest center of regional subordination. The city is located on the Berezina River (Dnieper basin) 150 km from Minsk, 110 km from Mogilev, 414 km from Kiev, 706 km from Moscow.
The name of Bobruisk comes from the name of the Bobruisk River, which flows into the Berezina on the site of modern Bobruisk. According to V.Toporov and O.Trubachev, the name of Bobruisk is Baltic and is associated with the Lithuanian bebras "beaver".
It is assumed that in the XII—XIII centuries Bobruisk belonged to the Minsk Principality. For the first time Bobruisk is mentioned in the letter of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Jagiello, which is addressed to his brother Skirgailo and dated April 28, 1387.In 1502, Crimean and Akkerman Tatars attacked Bobruisk and these Tatars devastated the surrounding area.
Bobruisk is marked on the map of Europe, published in 1540 in Basel. In 1565, the Bobruisk parish was part of the Rechitsa district of the Minsk Voivodeship.The city was owned by the Radziwills, Gashtolds, and Trizns.
