Overview

Bitcoin Magazine is the oldest news publication about Bitcoin. Bitcoin Magazine provides news, information, expert commentary, analysis, research, and education on Bitcoin, its blockchain technology and the cryptocurrency industry.

The magazine is published and mailed quarterly to subscribers, and the website provides articles and research online. David Bailey, co-founder of the publication's parent company BTC Media, is the CEO of Bitcoin Magazine. The magazine is headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee, and the site averages 1 million visits a month, the majority being from the United States.

Bitcoin Conferences

Bitcoin Magazine, in collaboration with all of the BTC Inc affiliated brands, has helped host annual Bitcoin conferences. They will help host another Bitcoin conference, Bitcoin 2022, in Miami, Florida in April 2022. They expect around 40,000 attendees at the 2022 conference. Speakers expected include the El Salvador President Nayib Bukele, Peter Thiel, and Michael Saylor.

In 2021, they helped host a global Bitcoin conference, Bitcoin 2021, with about 12,000 attendees, deemed the largest in-person event dedicated to Bitcoin at the time. The 2021 conference featured Jack Dorsey and Tony Hawk as keynote speakers. El Salvador President Nayib Bukele was also a conference speaker via video, and he used his speech to announce intentions to make Bitcoin legal tender in his country.

The magazine also helped host the Bitcoin 2019 conference in San Francisco in June 2019, with Edward Snowden and Tim Draper as a keynote speakers. Bitcoin 2019 had about 1900 attendees. The 2019 conference was referred to as "the return of Bitcoin's annual conference" because the conference was inspired by earlier events called Bitcoin 2013 and Bitcoin 2014.

The scheduled Bitcoin 2020 conference was canceled due to COVID 19, and ticket holders could transfer their tickets to the 2021 conference or request a refund.

Bitcoin Course

Bitcoin Magazine also offers a free twenty-one-day Bitcoin course. The course is administered by twenty-one daily emails and through the Carrot app. Participants can earn Bitcoin by completing the course and end-of-course quiz.

Ukrainian Bureau

In November 2021, Bitcoin Magazine announced a partnership with Ukrainian entrepreneur Sergey Tron to launch a bureau in Kyiv to serve the CIS region with Bitcoin-focused content. The expected office opening date was early 2022. As part of the partnership, Bitcoin Magazine would translate its existing content into Ukrainian and Russian and produce original content and reporting from the market in eleven countries, addressing an audience of some 240 million people.

Smithsonian Museum Exhibit

A copy of the magazine was displayed as part of the Value of Money exhibit, which opened in July 2015 at the Smithsonian Museum for the National Numismatic Collection. The copy on display was the February 2014 issue and featured a picture of the US quarter on the cover with George Washington's eyes blurred out.

Competitors

Cryptocurrency news sites have joined the market increasingly since Bitcoin Magazine was established. Competitors now include Coindesk, Cointelegraph, Decrypt and CryptoPotato.

Founding

The magazine was founded by Mihai Alisie and Vitalik Buterin, the creator of Ethereum, in 2011.Vitalik Buterin became interested in Bitcoin but could not afford to buy it and did not have the equipment to mine it. He instead found someone willing to pay him 5 Bitcoins per blog post he wrote. Mihai Alisie, from Romania, saw the blog posts and the two started corresponding. They decided to found Bitcoin Magazine in 2011. Vitalik Buterin became the head writer while still attending University of Waterloo and working as a research assistant. They published their first issue in May 2012.In 2012, Bitcoin Magazine established a distribution contract with Barnes & Noble as well.

Ownership

Soon after the magazine was founded, it was acquired later that same year in December 2012 by Coin Publishing LLC. Coin Publishing LLC was a new Florida-based entity that took over the full operations of Bitcoin Magazine, purchasing the assets and contracts from Bittalk Media Ltd for an undisclosed sum of cash plus Bitcoins. As part of the transaction, Mihai Alisie signed a twelve-month contract to work as editor in chief, and Vitalik Buterin signed a twelve-month contract to work as lead writer and webmaster. At the time, Coin Publishing LLC was collectively owned by individuals owning or working at BitPay, Butterfly Labs, Google, Casascius, 20 Mission, and Virtual Processing Solutions. With Coin Publishing LLC, they produced twenty-two issues of the magazine.

The media company changed hands again in January 2015 when it was acquired by BTC Media. BTC Media was co-founded by David Bailey, who became the CEO of Bitcoin Magazine. BTC Media remains the parent company of Bitcoin Magazine.
